ECONOMY GROWS 6.3% IN SECOND QUARTER (The Jakarta Post, 16 August 2007)

The economy grew 6.3 percent in the second quarter compared to a year ago, the fastest level in two years, on continued increases in exports, consumption and investment. The latest figures from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), which were released Wednesday, showed that second-quarter growth was the fastest since the first quarter of 2005. (read more)

RI SETS EIGHT NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES : YUDHOYONO (Antara, 16 August 2007)

The government has decided eight national development priorities in 2008 in an effort to speed up economic growth, reduce the country`s poverty and unemployment rates, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in his State of the Nation Address and Government`s Financial Notes on the Draft 2008 State Budget before the House`s plenary session here on Thursday. TAX REVENUE FOR 2008 SET AT RP583.7 TRILLION, PRESIDENT SAYS (Antara, 16 August 2007)

The government has set revenues from taxes at Rp583.7 trillion in the draft 2008 state budget, which are Rp93.8 trilion or 19.1 percent higher than the Rp489.9 trillion set in the previous revised 2007 state budget. (read more)

PROMOTION ON INDONESIAN TOURISM & TRADE  IN RIYADH, ON 2- 12 JULY 2007

Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia with Garuda Indonesia would jointly stage Indonesian Tourism and Trade Promotion. The event will be held in Royal Mall – Riyadh from the 2^nd of July to July 12,  2007. During the event, Indonesian Embassy and Garuda Indonesia would exhibit the beauty of Indonesian tourist sites and also provide information on tourism in Indonesia. (read more)

EDITORIAL: MORE BULLYING (Saudi Gazette, 16 August 2007)

The announcement that the US is about to place Iran's Revolutionary Guard on the US State Department's list of terrorist organization is another instance of Bush-bullying taking the place of diplomacy. There is no other conceivable explanation. (read more)

IRAQ, JORDAN TO BOLSTER SECURITY COOPERATION (Arab News, 16 August 2007)

ABBAS CONSIDERS POLL LAW CHANGE TO CURB HAMAS (Arab News, 16 August 2007)

In an apparent attempt to limit Hamas’ participation in new elections, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is looking at different options including a change in poll law, sources close to the presidency said yesterday. One of these options would bar candidates from Hamas and other groups from participating unless they accepted Palestinian law and previous agreements signed by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). DEMOCRACY TAKES A STEP FORWARD IN INDONESIA

The decision by the Constitu-tional Court last week to scrap two undemocratic clauses in Indonesia's Criminal Code should indeed be celebrated. Using the two clauses, articles 154 and 155, the state could send anyone to jail for what it considered defamation against the government. The two articles banned any act -- writing, speeches, statements -- that were subjectively considered by the state as expressing hostility toward the govt. (read more)

NATION MUST FIGHT AGAINST TWO FUNDAMENTALISMS

This is a note of encourage-ment. I live in a place which happens to be only a stone's throw from a state-run elemen-tary school in Central Jakarta. It has been more than a week now since the school children began singing rehearsals of the national anthem, "Indone- sia  Raya", as well as the many patriotic songs normally chan-ted on Independence Day.
