BRIEF HISTORY

 
     
 

After Indonesia proclaimed its independence on August 17, 1945, seven Arab countries extended their support and acknowledgment by both de jure and de facto to the existence of the state of the Republic of Indonesia. These seven Arab countries were: Egypt - 10 June 1947; Lebanon - 29 June 1947; Syria - 2 July 1947; Iraq - 16 July 1947; Saudi Arabia - 4 November 1947; Trans-Jordan and North Yemen - 3 May 1948.

 
     
 

On 7 August 1949, Indonesia opened its first Representative Office in Middle East in Cairo of Egypt. In 1950, this Office was changed to be the Indonesian Embassy with H. E. H. Mohammad Rasjidi as the first Ambassador. Indonesian Embassy in Cairo was also accredited to Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan.

 
     
 

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Indonesia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was officially established on 1 May 1950. At the early stage, Indonesia Diplomatic Representative for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was served by Indonesian Embassy for Egypt in Cairo.

 
     
 

The Indonesian Embassy for the Kingdom was opened in Jeddah in 1964. Due to the transfer of the Saudi's capital city form Jeddah to Riyadh, on 29 September 1985 Indonesian Embassy was moved from Jeddah to Riyadh. Indonesia Missions in Jeddah then was changed to be the Indonesian Consulate General.
